Toe Thompson finds himself on the wrong end of a fist—he’s being bullied. When a mysterious looking rainbow rock falls from the sky during a freak storm, Toe suddenly finds all of his wishes can come true. Unfortunately, the rainbow rock makes its way from person to person allowing the town the opportunity to see its wishes come true. Unfortunately, the old saying about being careful what you wish for isn’t enough—you have to also be careful how you wish FOR IT using the right words and being very, very specific. ***

Like Robert Rodriguez’s other kids films, “Shorts” IS entertaining but I wouldn’t exactly call it a good movie. “Shorts” allows Rodriguez to put all of the influences from a variety of science fiction, fantasy and horror films he saw as a kid into a movie that today’s kids can appreciate. “Shorts” isn’t as entertaining as some of Rodriguez’s previous efforts (“Spy Kids”) but it’s better than some of his later ones (“The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl”). ---

Image & Sound:

Rodriguez shot “Shorts” like his other releases on digital video allowing him to add and manipulate elements. The “film” looks surprisingly good with a crisp image and nice detail. ***

Audio sounds pretty good with a very active lossless 5.1 DTS soundtrack.

Special Features:

As with previous releases we get a “Ten Minute Film School” featurette that focuses on how Rodriguez made the movie. We also get another episode in the “Ten Minute Cooking School” focusing on how to make Chocolate Chip Volcano cookies. ***

“The Magic of Shorts” focuses on the visual effects and we also get “Shorts Show and Tell” featurette on the film as well as a digital copy of the film for MAC & PC viewing plus a DVD copy of the film. The Blu-ray disc is BD-Live enabled. ---

Final Words:

An entertaining flick from Robert Rodriguez “Shorts” demonstrates that he can continue to make appealing kids movies that don’t suffer from dumb down syndrome that typically mars these type of films. That said, “Shorts” is mildly entertaining but it’s far from a great film. I’d recommend renting this and not buying it.
