Family

Featurettes, commentary track, 3 new animated stories

Review:

A new national health care system, death panels and people worrying about being taxed for their health care benefits. Sounds like Woody and Buzz Lightyear’s world. Really it does if you think about it; in “Toy Story” Woody worries about being “old” and forgotten, whether or not he’ll stay together as time passes by or if he’ll end up in a garage sale. It’s kind of like our world except for toys the end of life often coincides with the end of childhood. **

“Toy Story” (for the two people on this planet that haven’t seen it) focuses on the rivalry between Woody (Tom Hanks) an old cowboy toy with no fancy features except a voice box and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen)a fancy NEW toy that has blinking lights, wings that pop out and threatens to replace Woody prompting Woody to plan to get rid of Buzz. The only problem is that the neighbor kid to “tortures” toys gets a hold of Buzz and Woody is forced to save him or be ostracized by the other toys. ---

Image & Sound:

A truly stellar, sharp, vivid and brilliant looking transfer “Toy Story” looks like a 9.5 out of 10 for image quality. Colors truly pop and the depth of the image is amazing even when compared to recent newer transfers of the film. With “Toy Story 3” on the horizon (which will be in 3D), “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” both have received top notch upgrades in all areas. ***

Audio sounds terrific with a lossless transfer that captures every tiny nuance of the original theatrical presentation of the film. How it that comes across of course depends on your system at home. ---

Special Features:

We get a wide variety of special features most of them from what I can tell new to this edition including: New Toy Story 3 sneak peek "The Story"; New Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs: Blast Off; New 3 animated studio stories; New Buzz Takes Manhattan; Making Toy Story; Filmmakers reflect; Deleted scenes & design galleries; DVD: New Toy Story 3 sneak peek "The Story"; New Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs: Blast Off; New 3 animated studio stories; New Buzz Lightyear Takes Manhattan. We also get an audio commentary track for the movie that’s top notch. ---

Final Words:

I’d say this is the ultimate “Toy Story” but I’m sure that Disney is prepping the next generation version of this movie for the Blu-ray 3D players/TVs that are supposed to be the next big thing. I like 3D as much as the next guy but until they get past people having to wear glasses all the time (battery powered glasses no less), then I’ll be satisfied with this version on Blu-ray for one of Pixar’s seminal films.
