“Ugly Betty-The Complete 4th and Final Season”
Wayne Klein
Studio: Touchstone
TV - Series
Release Date:
Special Features:

Featurettes, deleted scenes

In adapting shows from other countries some do well and some find that something gets lost in translation. “The Office” for example was nicely retooled for an American audience while a show like “Coupling” found itself cancelled after less than a season. “Ugly Betty” managed to jump the hurtle and was accepted in a variety of different countries as the premise was adapted to fit the cultural norms of each one. ***

What made “Ugly Betty” shine aside from the deft writing and direction were the performances particularly from star America Ferrera. The entire cast deserves kudos and recognition for their performances but Ferrera was the center piece of the series and a TV show is only as good as its star. ***

By the fourth season the popular show had run out of gas as far as the network was concerned (which is too bad because there was still more creative juice in the show) and ABC elected to cancel the show. The 20 episodes for the fourth season do a nice job of wrapping up many of the major plot points of the series.

Image & Sound:

The show looks from “ugly” with a nice anamorphic presentation. Colors look quite nice and flesh tones are accurate. Blacks are occasionally crushed in the presentation and there are occasional digital artifacts such as edge enhancement but on the whole the presentation is quite good. ***

Audio sounds quite nice with a solid 5.1 mix but keep in mind this is a dialog driven show. ---

Special Features:

These include webisodes, bloopers, deleted scene and one featurette “Betty Goes to the Bahamas”

Final Words:

The series ran its course remaining entertaining during its 4 seasons without jumping the shark. It’s too bad we can’t cancel faux celebrities like the Kardashians and make them go away like networks do with TV shows because THAT family stuck around well past its expiration date unlike this show which despite some flaws during the 4th and final season managed to still be entertaining.
